Specialist Programs

Alphington Primary School offers a range of specialist programs to complement our curriculum. Our offerings include Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Physical Education, Italian and Mandarin.
Visual Arts
Visual Arts sessions encourage students to explore their own creativity through the production of their own Art pieces.

At APS students create visual art works that communicate, challenge and express their own and others’ ideas. Using a variety of materials our students engage with and develop knowledge of visual arts skills, techniques and processes as they explore a range of forms, styles and contexts.

A highlight for many is our annual Visual Arts Show, where we invite the wider school community to come along and view our students' art work on display.

Performing Arts
Performing Arts sessions provide opportunities for students to develop confidence through performance.

At APS lessons in Drama, Music and Dance allow students to be creative, expressing their ideas in an accepting and supportive environment. During Performing Arts lessons students work collaboratively and are supported to critically explore and reflect on their own work and that of their peers.

All students are given the opportunity to participate in a range of school activities, the highlight for many being our Foundation - Year 1 Junior School Concert and our Year 2 - Year 6 Senior School Concert . Additionally, students have the opportunity to particiapte in instrumental, dance and vocal classes. Our students perform regularly at school events throughout the year.

Physical Education
Physical Education sessions aim to develop students’ general fitness, teamwork and game skills.

At APS we promote good sportsmanship and provide opportunities for our students to work in teams. Our Physical Education program is designed to highlight the benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle with an emphasis on having a go and having fun.

APS provides students with the opportunity to participate in school sporting carnivals and events throughout the school year.

Sporting highlights at APS include...
  • F-Year 6 Cross Country Run
  • Year 3-Year 6 Swimming Carnival
  • F-Year 2 and Year 3-Year 6 Athletics Carnival
  • Year 6 Interschool Sports
APS Language Program - LOTE

Through our Italian and Mandarin programs students develop an understanding about the role language and culture plays in communication. Both programs promote student engagement in language learning and cultural awareness, often through the use of songs, stories, games, arts and crafts. Integrating digital technologies is a key component of our LOTE program, where students design and create quizzes and use their online researching skills to create digital information texts.

A real highlight for many of our students are the annual Italian and Chinese Cultural Days. Held at seperate times during the year these celebrations allow our students to experience a different culture in an engaging, educational context. In addition the arrival of our Chinese visitors from Huaibei each August raises the profile of our Mandarin program with the wider school community, providing as it does a  real opportunity for our students to practise their Mandarin language skills in a purposeful way.

At APS as we build the teaching of Mandarin throughout the school, we offer Mandarin to our Foundation (Prep) to  Year 2 students. From Year 3 - Year 5 students choose to attend either Mandarin of Italian classes and for our Year 6 students Italian is offered.
